Bronfman and Salonen Cancel July 15 Hollywood Bowl Performance
A few days ago, the Hollywood Bowl quietly announced that July 15’s Tchaikovsky concert featuring Esa-Pekka Salonen and Yefim Bronfman would no longer feature Esa-Pekka Salonen and Yefim Bronfman! Odd.
The unofficial word is that Yefim Bronfman cancelled due to a minor medical procedure he must take care of, and Esa-Pekka Salonen cancelled for “personal reasons.” Apparently those “personal reasons” were quickly resolved, because he is still scheduled to conduct at the Bowl two days later for the Yuja Wang concert.
A quick google search indicates that I am the only person on the planet intrigued by this news. Apparently there is no TMZ equivalent for the classical music world, go figure. It is worth noting that Bronfman is performing today at the Aspen Music Festival, two days before his cancelled Hollywood Bowl appearance. It is also worth noting that Bronfman cancelled some dates in quick succession in October of 2011. An inner ear infection was the original reason given, then an injured finger. While it is strange that two very different reasons were used, it doesn’t exactly suggest a Jim Morrison-style pattern of unreliability.
The July 15 Hollywood Bowl Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1 performance will continue as planned…well, not exactly as planned. The classical music bat signal went out, and Behzod Abduraimov answered the call for guest pianist. James Gaffigan will now be conducting. Please note this is a different person than popular comic Jim Gaffigan.
Anyone out there have tickets for this Tuesday July 15 concert? Are you upset that the two headliners Bronfman and Salonen pulled out? Do give us your thoughts in the Comments.
